Singapore's healthcare system is frequently cited as one of the most efficient in the world, delivering high life expectancy and strong outcomes at a relatively modest share of national income. It blends heavy public subsidies with a philosophy of individual responsibility and co-payment, so that care is accessible but not treated as entirely free at the point of use.

Where you get care

Primary care is delivered through public polyclinics and a large network of private general practitioners (GPs). For more serious needs, the country has public restructured hospitals and specialist centres alongside private hospitals. Public facilities offer subsidised rates for citizens and permanent residents, with different subsidy tiers depending on ward class chosen.

The financing pillars

• MediSave — a compulsory personal medical savings account within the CPF system
• MediShield Life — a national health insurance scheme covering large bills
• MediFund — a safety-net endowment for those who cannot afford care despite the above

Together these are often called the '3Ms'. Many residents also carry additional private Integrated Shield Plans for higher levels of coverage. The design encourages people to be conscious of costs while protecting against catastrophic bills.

For newcomers

Foreigners on work passes typically rely on employer-provided or private insurance, since national subsidies and MediSave apply to citizens and permanent residents. GP visits are straightforward and widely available; pharmacies are common; and the overall standard of care — public or private — is high.
