Getting Around Singapore: Buses, Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The MRT gets most of the attention, but Singapore's buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps are just as important — especially for the first and last mile of a journey. Together they make owning a car genuinely optional for most residents.

Buses

The bus network is extensive and reaches virtually every corner of the island, including places the MRT does not. Buses use the same EZ-Link or contactless payment as the trains, with distance-based fares, and you tap both when boarding and alighting. Real-time arrival information is available through several apps.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Traditional metered taxis remain common and can be flagged down or booked. Alongside them, ride-hailing apps — most prominently Grab, along with other operators — are widely used and often the most convenient option for door-to-door trips, late nights or heavier loads. Prices are transparent and shown up front in the apps.

Cycling and walking

Singapore has been expanding its network of park connectors and cycling paths, and shared-bicycle and personal-mobility options exist in some areas under strict safety rules. The tropical heat and humidity, however, mean many people prefer the air-conditioned MRT for longer trips.
